Remix licensing
& distribution.
The only legal way to remix — set your terms, license your tracks, and earn from every version.
Process
How it works
Upload & List
Upload your track or stems, set your license terms — price, royalty splits, number of licenses, distribution rules — and list it to the marketplace. You keep ownership and control over every version that stems from your license.
Browse, Buy & Create
Creators browse the marketplace, find what inspires them, and purchase a license with one click. Creators can then download the licensed content and create their new version using their preferred audio production tools.
Distribute New Version (v2)
Creators release their v2s through vers1ons' distribution service to all major DSPs and UGC platforms.
Get Paid
When a v2 earns royalties, those royalties flow back to the v2 creator and the original artist/rightsholder in accordance with their royalty splits, automatically. No accountants necessary.
Repeat
A v2 creator can list their version to be remixed again with a new license. When the v3 earns royalties, they flow back to the v3 creator, v2 creator, and original rightsholder — automatically.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
vers1ons is a platform that makes it easy and legal to remix music — and earn from it — by connecting creators with rightsholders who want to license their music for remixing.
If you're a creator, you can browse our catalog of pre-cleared songs, license a song in minutes, and distribute and earn from your remix. No chasing down rightsholders, no expensive legal work, no legal risk.
If you're a label, catalog company, artist, or other rightsholder wanting to license your music for remixing, you customize your license terms and earn not only from the sale of each license, but every time a remix of your music (or a remix of the remix) earns royalties.
vers1ons also handles distribution to streaming platforms and royalty payments — all in one place. See FAQ for more details.
The Remix License Agreement (RLA) is a legal contract between the licensor (the rightsholder listing the track) and the licensee (the user purchasing the license to remix the track).
The RLA sets out what you can do with the remix, how royalties are split between the licensor and the licensee, and the terms under which the licensee can license their remix to other creators for remixing (a “subsequent remix”).
The licensor customizes their license terms when they list a song to vers1ons — including royalty splits and any restrictions on use. Those terms are set forth in the listing for creators to review prior to purchasing. A licensee must accept the terms of the RLA prior to purchasing the license. Once purchased, the licensor and licensee have entered into a legally binding agreement.
A Subsequent Remix License Agreement (SRLA) is the license agreement that governs remixes of remixes.
When a licensee creates a remix from a track they licensed through vers1ons, they can list their remix on vers1ons for other creators to license and remix. When another creator licenses that remix, the SRLA is the legal contract between them — setting out the same core terms as the original remix license agreement: permitted uses, royalty splits, and the right to license the new remix to be remixed again (i.e., another subsequent use).
The SRLA is what makes multi-generational remixing possible. Each new version in the chain is covered by its own agreement, and royalties flow back automatically through every generation — so the original rightsholder earns from the remix, the remix of the remix, and so on.
A non-exclusive license means that the rightsholder retains full ownership of their music and can continue to license it to as many creators as they want. Purchasing a license on vers1ons does not give you exclusive rights to remix a track — other creators can license and remix the same song.
This is standard practice in music licensing and is what makes a marketplace like vers1ons possible.
When a remix earns royalties on streaming platforms, those earnings are split between the licensee (the creator of the remix) and the licensor (the original rightsholder). The split is set by the licensor when they list their track and is disclosed to the creator before they purchase the license.
When a remix is itself remixed, royalties from that subsequent remix are split between the subsequent creator, the remix creator, and the original rightsholder in accordance with the splits set forth in the relevant license agreements.
vers1ons handles the distribution of remixes and the royalty tracking of streaming revenues, so every rightsholder and creator in the chain gets paid without having to manage it themselves.
Distributing through vers1ons enables the automatic royalty tracking and payment system to work across generations of remixes. When you distribute your remix through vers1ons, we can track streams, calculate royalty splits, and make sure everyone in the chain gets paid automatically. It also means you don't have to manage any of that yourself.
If you distributed your remix outside of vers1ons, there would be no easy way to honor the royalty obligations you agreed to when you purchased the license. Distribution through vers1ons is how we make sure the terms of your license agreement (and all agreements in the chain) are upheld for everyone.
Original tracks can be distributed outside of vers1ons.
Yes. In addition to remixes, vers1ons offers distribution services for original music.
vers1ons charges two fees: a Transaction Fee and a Platform Fee.
The Transaction Fee is charged on each license purchase to support marketplace operations, provenance tracking, and automated legal contracting. It is equal to 30% of the license fee and is shared equally between the licensor and licensee.
The Platform Fee is charged on the distribution and administration of royalties. It is equal to 20% of the gross royalties received from streaming platforms.
